This step helps eliminate lingering self-tanner residues and sloughs off dead skin cells. For optimal exfoliation, we suggest using the blushtan® Exfoliating Mitt or opting for a dry brush. Those with particularly dry skin should apply a moisturizer that’s safe for sunless tanning afterward; the blushtan® Hydrating Moisturizer is highly recommended. Additionally, complete any shaving or other forms of hair removal at least 12 hours before your appointment to allow your skin to settle.
Shower and exfoliate 6-12 hours prior to your appointment to remove any old self-tanners, as well as all dry, dead skin. For best results, use the blushtan® Exfoliating Mitt or a dry brush. If you have more dry skin type, moisturize with a ‘sunless safe’ product- we recommend blushtan® Hydrating Moisturizer. You should shave and take care of any other hair removal at least 12 hours before your appointment. The day of your appointment- For best results, shower and remove all sweat, make-up, perfume, deodorant, and oils using a ‘sunless safe’ product, like our blushtan® Body Polish. If you are unable to obtain blushtan® ‘sunless-safe’ skincare products prior to your appointment, opt for simple drugstore brands like CeraVe and Cetaphil. However, please always avoid products with acne-fighting ingredients, as well as all products from brands like Dove, Aveeno, Vaseline and Olay.

If you have a recent sunburn, we do not recommend getting a spray tan until your skin has completely healed and all peeling has completely subsided. For best results, wait five days after your skin has healed before coming in for your next spray tan. When your skin gets burned by UV light, it can damage several layers of your epidermis, and your body then sheds those damaged skin cells. This causes peeling skin and uneven texture, and getting a spray tan with your skin in this condition will only provide patchy, uneven results. We know this probably isn’t what you want to hear, especially if you were hoping a spray tan could even out your skin tone post-peel, but please trust us when we say that a spray tan will only make things look worse in this scenario!
Feel free to undress to your comfort level during your session; you decide what stays on and what comes off. Any clothing you wear, such as undergarments or a bathing suit, can be laundered once in a normal cycle to remove the tanning solution. We ask all male clients to bring something to cover their private areas—thongs are fine, but socks are not recommended. After the application, we suggest wearing loose, dark clothing and flip-flop type footwear for the best results.
